Egypt mulls EBRD investment in aviation industry

Egypt’s Minister of Civil Aviation Sameh El-Hefny met with officials from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to explore opportunities for European investment in Egypt’s civil aviation sector.

The meeting focused on funding infrastructure projects for Egyptian airports in line with the government’s divestment programme to enhance the private sector’s role in the economy, as per a Cabinet statement on Tuesday.

Both sides addressed the importance of integrating environmental sustainability and advanced technologies into aviation projects, in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030 for sustainable development, the statement added.

El-Hefny reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to enhancing the air transport system through international partnerships and global financing institutions to create an attractive investment climate and provide high-quality services.

He highlighted the ministry’s goal to modernise Egyptian airports and make them reflect the country’s development. He also emphasised the important role of financial institutions like the EBRD in enhancing aviation infrastructure and passenger services.

El-Hefny also stressed the importance of eco-friendly projects meeting international standards to balance economic growth and natural resource preservation, enhancing Egypt’s role as a competitive regional aviation hub.

EBRD officials praised Egypt’s efforts to modernise the civil aviation sector and reiterated the bank’s commitment to supporting infrastructure projects that promote sustainability and create new opportunities for private sector involvement.

They also expressed interest in providing both technical and financial support for projects aimed at improving airport efficiency and service quality, helping Egypt cement its role as a regional aviation centre.
