Luxor health insurance system serves over 5.6m in 2024/2025

Egypt’s Comprehensive Health Insurance system in Luxor delivered over 5.6 million medical services worth 3.19 billion Egyptian pounds in the 2024/2025 fiscal year, covering more than 90 per cent of the governorate’s residents, according to the General Authority for Comprehensive Health Insurance.

The number of registered citizens reached 1,289,697 out of a total population of 1,449,098, with 843,000 family files opened. The state covers contributions for 120,418 low-income residents, including “Takaful and Karama” beneficiaries, under Comprehensive Health Insurance Law No. 2 of 2018.

Services were provided through a network of 79 contracted healthcare facilities, including 54 family health units, 6 hospitals under the Authority, and 19 private and NGO providers. Primary care accounted for 4,051,249 services worth 632.6 million Egyptian pounds, while secondary and tertiary care cost 2.56 billion Egyptian pounds for more than 1.6 million services.

High-cost interventions included 35 open-heart surgeries worth 4.52 million Egyptian pounds, 164 joint replacement surgeries worth 15.38 million Egyptian pounds, 37 organ transplants worth 5.41 million Egyptian pounds, and 21 complex coronary CTO catheterisations worth 3.99 million Egyptian pounds. More than 1.18 million oncology services were delivered at a cost of 374 million Egyptian pounds.

The Authority issued 32,827 electronic treatment approvals and 52 exceptional approvals for urgent and complex medical cases. It also handled 206,878 data update requests, introduced evening shifts at 20 per cent of service outlets, and implemented an instalment system for contributions. A total of 103 field inspections were conducted to ensure contracted providers met quality standards.
