Egypt, Cyprus push ahead with strategic partnership, energy ties at UNGA

Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly met Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to press ahead with a strategic partnership declaration and deepen energy and economic cooperation, Egypt’s Cabinet said on Tuesday.

Christodoulides said he looked forward to finalising the declaration, first raised at a summit in January, and stressed the importance of boosting trade, investment and implementing existing agreements.

Madbouly highlighted Egypt’s priority on energy collaboration, particularly with Cyprus and Italy’s Eni in natural gas exploration, describing it as a strategic partnership with mutual benefits.

He praised Cyprus for backing Egypt in the European Union and voiced confidence that support would continue when Cyprus assumes the EU presidency next year. Madbouly also invited Christodoulides and the First Lady to Cairo on Nov. 1 for the official inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum.
