Egypt’s Health Min. reviews expansion plans for ICU, emergency units

Egypt’s Minister of Health Khaled Abdel Ghaffar reviewed plans to expand intensive care units (ICUs), neonatal incubators and emergency services nationwide to ease pressure on hospitals, the Cabinet said on Saturday.

Abdel Ghaffar said the project had strong backing from Egypt’s political leadership to ensure round-the-clock efficiency and remove obstacles, given the critical role of emergency and intensive care in saving lives.

The minister examined daily occupancy rates, medicine and supply availability, and maintenance of medical equipment in hospitals, according to the statement. He also discussed training more specialised emergency physicians and new approaches to maximise existing resources in cooperation with other entities.

Abdel Ghaffar highlighted the need for transparency in tracking vacant hospital beds and coordinating services to direct patients to suitable facilities, which he said would improve efficiency and quality of care.
