Egypt aims to localise the production of electronic chips and solar cells using domestic raw materials to drive renewable energy expansion and reduce import dependence, Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawy told Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly on Tuesday.
During the meeting, Badawy outlined the ministry’s strategy to ramp up petroleum production and exploration, develop refining and petrochemical industries, and strengthen the mining sector while expanding regional cooperation to attract investment.
He said the plan also targets improving energy efficiency, cutting emissions, and advancing hydrogen production through close coordination with the electricity sector.
Badawy added that Egypt plans to launch new exploratory drilling between 2026 and 2030 to boost natural gas output and reinforce the country’s ambition to become a regional gas trading hub.
The minister said ongoing and planned projects to increase diesel and gasoline production with national companies would help lower import bills and support regional partnerships.
He also noted that studies and field missions are underway with international partners to explore rare earth minerals, part of efforts to develop high-value local industries.
