Egypt, UAE strengthen energy cooperation under Global Alliance for Energy Efficiency

Egypt and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to strengthen cooperation on energy efficiency and sustainability as part of the UAE-led Global Alliance for Energy Efficiency, Egyptian petroleum ministry said on Thursday.

The agreement came during a meeting between Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawy and Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.

The alliance, which includes about 40 member countries, aims to promote financial and technological solutions and foster partnerships between governments, technology providers, and financing institutions to advance energy efficiency projects that cut consumption and carbon emissions. Its dedicated platform is expected to launch by the end of next month.

The two sides also discussed Egypt’s ongoing energy efficiency initiatives and the UAE’s experience in optimising energy use across government and industrial facilities. They explored the application of artificial intelligence in energy management to help preserve resources, boost industrial productivity, and support environmental sustainability.

Talks further covered cooperation opportunities in unconventional oil and gas resources, as well as Egypt’s plans to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) through the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM) using used cooking oil as feedstock. The project is expected to align with international civil aviation standards and deliver significant local and regional benefits.

Al Olama invited Badawy to attend the upcoming World Governments Summit in the UAE, which will host the first roundtable of the Global Alliance for Energy Efficiency. The minister accepted the invitation, the statement added.
