Maersk considers full return to Suez Canal operations amid improved Red Sea conditions

Shipping giant Maersk is considering a full-scale resumption of transits through Egypt’s Suez Canal and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, citing their strategic importance to global trade, the company said on Thursday.

The decision will follow consultations with the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) and a review of regional security conditions, Maersk said after a video conference between company executives and SCA Chairman Osama Rabie.

Rabie said the current period presents a favourable opportunity for Maersk to resume Canal transits, highlighting the long-standing partnership between the Authority and the Danish shipping group.

Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc said the company is closely monitoring security developments while prioritising seafarer safety. He added that any return would involve a full reinstatement of operations, signalling a step toward restoring normal global shipping flows.

Both sides are expected to deepen cooperation across maritime and logistics sectors in the coming period.
