Egypt, China’s NORINCO discuss nuclear materials, renewable energy cooperation

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat met on Tuesday with officials from China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) to explore cooperation in nuclear materials, mining, and renewable energy, the ministry said.

The discussions covered exploration, extraction, and manufacturing of nuclear-related materials, as well as technical expertise exchange and human capacity building to support peaceful nuclear energy applications. Both sides also focused on advancing Egypt’s strategy to strengthen partnerships with international firms, transfer and localise modern technologies, and extract strategic and rare elements.

Talks included cooperation under the Nuclear Materials Authority’s mandate, including studies on exploration, separation, and manufacturing processes. The officials also discussed renewable energy projects, particularly solar and wind power, energy storage systems, and expanding clean energy solutions to accelerate Egypt’s energy transition, raise the share of renewables in the energy mix, and cut carbon emissions.

The meeting highlighted the importance of identifying key stakeholders, establishing collaboration frameworks, and accelerating initiatives based on existing studies.

Both sides emphasised that the talks reflect the longstanding partnership between Egypt and China, aiming to enhance cooperation across the energy sector and support sustainable development goals.
