Egypt’s Red Sea Container Terminal 1 (RSCT) at Sokhna Port officially began commercial operations on Thursday, marking a key milestone in Egypt’s port development. The launch was highlighted by the arrival of the CMA CGM IRON vessel from Beirut carrying 13,000 containers, one month after the terminal began trial operations. Hutchison Ports manages the facility, a CMA–COSCO Shipping consortium.
The opening is part of the Port Said Development and Completion Project, a major component of the integrated logistics corridor connecting Port Said and Alexandria, linking the Red Sea to the Mediterranean.
Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly attended the launch, emphasising the role of port development in strengthening Egypt’s position as a regional hub for trade and logistics, leveraging the country’s strategic location and supporting the broader national development plan.
Kamel Al-Wazir, Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Transport, noted that the fully automated terminal operates to the highest international standards, enabling Port Said to accommodate the largest global shipping lines. He added that the Ministry of Transport is pursuing strategic partnerships with leading container terminal operators and shipping lines.
Al-Wazir also highlighted that the terminal will boost Egyptian exports and open new markets through direct shipping services and an integrated multimodal transport system connecting maritime container terminals with railway networks and the high-speed electric train.
