Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hany Swailem joined Rwanda’s Umuganda Day activities during his official visit, responding to an invitation from Rwanda’s Minister of Environment Bernadette Arakwiye.
Umuganda, a national community service initiative held on the last Saturday of each month, requires citizens and officials to participate in community work from 08:00 to 11:00. The Kinyarwanda term “Umuganda” means “coming together in common purpose to achieve an outcome.” It has long existed in Rwandan culture but only recently became mandatory as is required by law, and failure to participate can result in a fine.
In a symbolic gesture, Minister Swailem and the Egyptian delegation planted trees, highlighting the shared commitment to environmental protection and nature-based solutions. Their participation also underscored the depth of Egypt–Rwanda relations and both countries’ dedication to fostering positive cooperation and exchanging expertise in areas of mutual interest.
The ministers emphasised the importance of building on community and environmental initiatives to strengthen cooperation, promote public participation, and advance sustainability and development goals across Africa.
Umuganda Day brings together thousands of citizens and officials nationwide to engage in community projects such as tree planting, infrastructure improvements, and other local development activities, reflecting a practical partnership between the state and society.
