Egypt sets price caps for tourist, fino bread to stabilise market

Egypt has set maximum prices for tourist bread and fino bread in privately run bakeries in a move aimed at stabilising the market and ensuring availability at reasonable prices, the Ministry of Supply said on Thursday.

Supply and Internal Trade Minister Sherif Farouk issued Ministerial Directive No. 5 of 2026 regulating the production and sale of the two types of bread, according to a ministry statement.

Under the directive, bakeries producing tourist and European-style bread must supply their own 72 per cent extraction flour to ensure continued production without affecting the state’s subsidised bread programme.

The ministry set the maximum price for tourist bread at 2 Egyptian pounds for an 80-gram loaf, 1.5 pounds for 60 grams, and 1 pound for 40 grams. Fino bread will cost up to 2 pounds for a 50-gram loaf, 1.5 pounds for 40 grams, and 1 pound for 30 grams.

Bakeries are required to clearly display prices and weights for consumers, the ministry said.

The ministry warned that violations of price or weight regulations would be subject to legal penalties under existing laws, adding that supply directorates and regulatory bodies would monitor compliance.
