Egypt, Chevron sign deal to fast-track Cyprus’ Aphrodite gas link
Egypt and Chevron signed an agreement on Monday to accelerate development of Cyprus’s Aphrodite gas field and connect it to Egyptian infrastructure, the petroleum ministry said, reinforcing Cairo’s role as a regional energy hub.
The signing took place on the sidelines of the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES 2026), in the presence of Petroleum Minister Karim Badawy and Cyprus’ Energy Minister Michael Demianos.
The host government agreement was initialled between Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Chevron, represented by Mohamed El-Bagoury, head of the ministry’s legal affairs department, and Javier La Rosa, president of base assets and emerging countries at the US energy company.
The deal aims to accelerate development of the Aphrodite field and enable its connection to Egypt’s gas transport and processing network, allowing Cypriot gas to be exported via Egypt.
Egypt has been seeking to position itself as a regional hub for gas trading and liquefaction, leveraging its infrastructure to process gas from eastern Mediterranean fields and supply international markets.
