Egypt in talks to expand Scatec investments, deepen renewable energy cooperation

Egypt is seeking to expand its partnership with the Norwegian renewable energy company Scatec as it works to accelerate its shift towards cleaner energy and attract more foreign investment.

In talks on Tuesday with Scatec’s chief executive Terje Pilskog, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atty, outlined the government’s ambition to scale up renewable energy projects and strengthen the country’s position as a regional hub for green power. The meeting, according to a government statement, focused on increasing the company’s footprint in Egypt and exploring new areas of cooperation.

Egypt has in recent years placed renewable energy at the centre of its economic strategy, aiming not only to generate more power from solar and wind sources but also to build domestic industries around them. Abdel-Atty pointed to potential projects including a wind turbine manufacturing plant and a solar-powered desalination facility, both of which would contribute to local production and reduce reliance on imports.

The government is also betting on its natural advantages — abundant sunlight, strong wind corridors, and a strategic geographic position — to attract international developers and position the country as a future hub for green hydrogen production. Such projects are expected to play a key role in Egypt’s long-term energy and export plans.

Beyond its borders, the minister told Pilskog that Egypt is looking to expand cooperation with Scatec across Africa through joint renewable energy projects, part of a broader effort to extend its economic and political footprint while supporting the continent’s energy transition.
