Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority and the Cairo Transport Authority signed an agreement on Thursday to build five electric-powered river buses for Cairo’s public transport network.
Under the agreement, the vessels will be constructed by the Suez Canal Company for Modern Boats, a Safaga-based subsidiary of the authority, in coordination with the Suez Canal Authority’s shipyards administration and under technical supervision from Italian classification society RINA.
Each river bus will measure 19 metres in length and 5.5 metres in width, with a passenger capacity of 60, according to a statement from the Suez Canal Authority.
Osama Rabie said the project forms part of efforts to expand local manufacturing of marine and river transport vessels and strengthen Egypt’s maritime industrial capabilities.
He added that the vessels were designed using environmentally friendly technologies as part of broader efforts to support sustainable transport solutions.
The project will mark the first introduction of clean-energy-powered river transport units into Cairo’s public transport system and aims to improve service quality.
