Sisi welcomes Trump’s Iran accord, calls for wider regional de-escalation at G7 meeting

As a new US-Iran agreement raises hopes of easing regional tensions, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi used a meeting with President Donald Trump to expand diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts across the Middle East.

The discussion, held on the sidelines of the 52nd G7 Summit in France on Wednesday, highlighted Egypt’s view that the US-Iran framework agreement could create a rare opening for broader political settlements across a region that has spent years overlapping wars and unresolved disputes.

According to the Egyptian presidency, Sisi congratulated Trump on the agreement, describing it as a potentially important step towards breaking a cycle of escalation that has shaped much of the region’s recent history.

But Egypt’s message extended beyond Iran. Sisi argued that any durable reduction in tensions would require renewed efforts to address unresolved regional disputes, particularly the Palestinian issue, which Cairo continues to regard as central to long-term stability in the Middle East.

“Egypt stands ready to exert all efforts, alongside regional and international partners, to support this process and reach sustainable solutions to outstanding issues,” the presidency quoted Sisi as telling Trump.

Egypt has been seeking to position itself as a key mediator in efforts to contain spillovers from the Gaza conflict, with Sisi telling Trump that Cairo would continue coordinating closely with Washington to support initiatives aimed at restoring calm and advancing political talks on the enclave.

The US president, according to the Egyptian presidency, praised Egypt’s regional role and Sisi’s personal engagement in mediation efforts, and underscored the importance of continued coordination between Washington and Cairo on Middle East stability.

Beyond regional conflicts, the meeting addressed another longstanding priority for Cairo: Nile water security. Sisi described the issue as integral to Egypt’s national security and economic development, while Trump expressed understanding of Egypt’s concerns and indicated that the matter would remain under close consideration.

According to the presidency, Sisi also congratulated Trump ahead of the United States’ upcoming 250th Independence Day celebrations and reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with Washington.

The talks underscored how Cairo views the current diplomatic moment not as an isolated breakthrough but as a potential starting point for broader negotiations that could reshape the regional landscape if sustained political engagement follows.
