Egypt’s Central Bank trains 11 African counterparts on climate risks

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) hosted a five-day training programme for 25 participants representing 11 central banks from COMESA member states, along with a delegation from the COMESA Monetary Institute (CMI), on incorporating climate risks into micro- and macro-stress testing.

Held at the Egyptian Banking Institute (EBI) headquarters in Cairo, the programme covered climate risks and their integration into stress testing using standard models, as well as stress tests for credit, liquidity, climate change and interbank contagion risks.

The sessions were delivered by lecturers from the CBE’s Macroprudential Sector, Offsite Supervision Sector, and Financial Inclusion’s Sustainability Department, addressing the theoretical and practical aspects of incorporating climate-related risks into stress-testing frameworks.

Participants also exchanged experiences and discussed challenges associated with climate risks and their impact on the banking sector and financial stability.

The programme concluded with proposals and recommendations on how integrating climate-related risks into stress tests could affect the operations of COMESA central banks. These recommendations will be discussed by central bank governors at their annual meeting in Malawi in November 2026.
