Clashes erupted between security forces and hundreds of members of hardcore sports fans known as Ultras in Alexandria on Monday night, resulting in the arrest of dozens of fans.
The clashes erupted during a basketball match between Ahly club and Smouha club which was taking place in the city. Security forces fired teargas to disperse a group of Ultras Devils, hardcore fans of Ahly, when the group tried to get into the game after being banned from attending.
According to the Ultras Devils’ official Facebook page, the group began to cheer for their team and sing outside the club before security forces came and dispersed them.
The page announced that 50 members of the group were arrested after the end of the basketball game between Ahly and Smouha.
A new law issued in Egypt on Monday bans protests and public gatherings that have not received prior approval from the authorities.
