Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan To Sign A Water Projects Memorandum: Source

The third session of tripartite negotiations over Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam began in the Sudanese capital on Tuesday, Al-Ahram’s Arabic news website reported.

An Egyptian delegation consisting of Irrigation Minister Hossam El-Moghazi and other officials traveled to Khartoum to meet with their Ethiopian and Sudanese counterparts for a new round of talks over the dam.

A source told Al-Ahram’s reporter in Khartoum that the delegations of the three countries are expected to sign a memorandum at the end of the fourth session.

The source added that the memorandum will be an understanding between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan on enhancing cooperation regarding water projects constructed on the Nile.

El-Moghazi has previously said that Egypt has a new “vision” regarding the Ethiopian dam.

The project has been a source of concern for the Egyptian government since May 2013, when images of the dam’s construction stirred public anxiety about the possible impact on Egypt’s potable water supply.

Ethiopia maintains that Egypt’s water share will not be negatively affected by the successful completion of the project, set to be Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam.

This week’s tripartite talks were initially planned to take place in Cairo but were later moved to Khartoum.
