President of Egyptian club Smouha, Farag Amer, reitereated Monday that Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o is on the verge joining his outfit, saying only a few details are yet to be worked out to complete the deal.
“The player was due to arrive in Egypt within days after reaching an agreement to sign him for one and a half year,” Amer told Ahram Online.
“Negotiations were in progress but the player’s agent suddenly asked us for a commission and a football injury insurance for the player. We will wait and see what will happen,” the famous businessman added.
Eto’o, 34, currently plays at Turkish side Antalyaspor.
The four-time African Player of the Year has featured for a host of European heavyweights throughout his glittering career, such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea.
The veteran striker joined Antalyaspor following short stints at Everton and Sampdoria.
He ended his international career in 2014 after making 118 appearances with the Indomitable Lions, winning the Africa Cup of Nations twice in 2000 and 2002.
New winter signings
Smouha, who ended the Egyptian league in 10th place last season, are on the lookout for winter deals to bolster their squad.
“We have already signed Ahly forward Mohamed Hamdy Zaki and defender Sherif Hazem, in addition to Zamalek midfielder Ibrahim Salah, all on loan till the end of the season,” Amer explained.
“We are also close to signing another African star to add more strength to the team in the second half of the season,” he concluded without disclosing details.
Smouha currently lie eighth in the Egyptian league with 20 points from 14 matches, seven behind leaders and defending champions Zamalek.
Amer owns one of the biggest and most diverse food company in the country, the Faragello group.
He entered football world when he was elected as the president of Smouha in 1998, a fourth division team at the time.
Under his leadership, Smouha reached Egypt’s Premier League for the first time in the 2010-2011 season.
Smouha’s best achievement was finishing as runners-up in both the Egyptian league and Egypt Cup in the 2013/2014 season. They also managed to reach the group stage of the CAF Champions League in the same term.
