Egyptian government hired 52% more foreign employees in 2015

Egypt’s government hired 51.8 percent more foreign employees in 2015 compared to 2014, raising the number of foreigners under state employ to 850 people, official statistics agency CAPMAS announced on Monday.

Almost 52 percent of foreigners working for the Egyptian government hail from Europe, followed by 16 percent from Asian countries.

The Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and the Egyptian Radio and Television Union hire 53 percent of the foreigners working with government entities in Egypt, CAPMAS noted.

Almost 40 percent of foreign government employees in Egypt work in the public sector, with the majority employed by the Eyptian Natural Gas Holding.

In Septmeber 2015, the Ministry of Manpower issued a decree to regulate foreigners working in Egypt. These regulations set a cap on the percentage of foreigners working in any one institution at 10 percent.

The government set a fee of EGP 3,000 (around $383) for work permit applications. Should a worker seek to renew their permit, fees would rise starting fourth year of employment and could reach EGP 12,000 (approximately $1,530) over extended periods.
