Egypt hands over two strategic islands to Saudi Arabia

Egypt says it has agreed to hand the ownership of two disputed islands in the Red Sea to Saudi Arabia, after Riyadh signed multi-billion dollar investment deals with Cairo during King Salman’s visit to the country. The agreement on the strategic islands of Tiran and Sanafir has triggered angry reactions online. Thousands have taken to Twitter, accusing Egyptian President Abdelfattah el-Sisi of selling the islands. Opponents are expressing outrage, saying Sissi has given up national territory for Saudi money. Legal experts in Egypt have also rejected Sissi’s decision to surrender Egyptian territory as unconstitutional. The banned opposition Muslim Brotherhood has condemned the move as well. Sissi still needs the approval of the parliament to implement his decision.
