Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi expressed on Friday heartfelt condolences to the people of Vietnam and Vietnamese leadership over the death of the president Trần Đại Quang, said Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi.
Quang, 61, died on Friday in a military hospital in Hanoi of a “serious illness despite efforts by domestic and international doctors and professors,” Vietnam Television said.
Egypt and Vietnam have enjoyed growing trade and economic relations in recent years.
In late August, the late Vietnamese president spent two days in Egypt on an official visit to discuss strengthening cooperation across various fields.
Before meeting Sisi in Cairo, Quang toured Upper Egypt’s historic city of Luxor.
Quang’s visit was the first time a Vietnamese head of state had visited Egypt since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1963.
In September 2017, El-Sisi visited Vietnam, the first ever visit by an Egyptian president to Hanoi.
