Alexandria metro project moves forward

Egypt’s Ministry of Transport announced on Tuesday progress in the implementation of the first phase of the Alexandria Metro project, with girder installation currently underway.

The project, which stretches 21.7 km from Abu Qir Railway Station to Misr Railway Station, includes a 6.5 km ground-level section from Misr Station to before Dhahereyya Station, followed by a 15.2 km elevated section extending to Abu Qir Station. The metro will feature 20 stations, comprising six ground-level and 14 elevated stations.

Construction work is progressing, with girder installation taking place in the manoeuvring area before Abu Qir Station. Additionally, piling work for the elevated track columns is ongoing between Tosson and Victoria Stations, while foundation work for the stations is also underway.

The metro is expected to significantly enhance Alexandria’s public transport system, providing a sustainable, environmentally friendly solution that will support the governorate’s economic and social development. It aims to improve operational safety by eliminating level crossings, unauthorised crossings, and traffic intersections, while also reducing congestion and fuel consumption as the system operates on clean electric energy.

The project will increase passenger capacity from 2,850 passengers per hour per direction to 60,000 passengers per hour per direction, while reducing travel time from 50 minutes to 25 minutes. The metro’s operational speed will rise from 25 km/h to 100 km/h, and headway will improve to 2.5 minutes.

The new metro line will integrate with key railway and tram networks, including the Cairo-Alexandria Railway at Misr Station, the Cairo-Alexandria Railway and Raml Tram at Sidi Gaber Station, the Raml Tram at Victoria Station, and the Rashid Railway at Maamoura Station.
