China stocks wobble amid tariff uncertainty

China’s stock market volatility continues as investors try to understand the potential impact of US President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on the economy. Despite threats of high tariffs on Chinese imports, the lack of immediate action has made markets cautious.

The CSI300 blue-chip index rose 0.13 per cent, while the Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.08 per cent. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index increased 0.79 per cent, lifting MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan by 0.34 per cent.

The absence of tariff announcements on China has boosted sentiment, but it leaves investors in a guessing game, creating an overhang, said Kenny Ng, securities strategist at China Everbright Securities International.

The onshore yuan held onto some overnight gains, trading at 7.2781 per dollar, while the offshore yuan eased 0.2 per cent to 7.2801.
