Egypt explores AI deployment with SLB to boost oil, gas production

Egypt is expanding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) across its petroleum sector to increase oil and gas production, improve operational efficiency, and reduce costs. Minister of Petroleum, Karim Badawi, said on Monday during a meeting with executives from SLB Egypt.

The meeting reviewed the deployment of AI applications in exploration and production activities, the development of the Egypt Upstream Gateway (EUG), and technologies to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Badawi said the ministry considers AI a key tool for increasing production, improving operational efficiency, cutting costs, and supporting data-driven decision-making. He stressed the importance of building an integrated digital system linking geological, geophysical, and production data with control centres to enable real-time performance monitoring and predict operational problems before they occur.

SLB presented digital solutions that use AI to analyse exploration and production data, including technologies that enable the early prediction of equipment failures and distinguish between production declines caused by operational issues and natural reservoir changes, allowing faster corrective action and improved efficiency.

The meeting also covered AI applications to improve energy efficiency and lower emissions, with SLB showcasing solutions for real-time energy consumption monitoring, equipment performance optimisation, and early methane emission detection.

Both sides agreed to continue coordinating on prioritising AI applications capable of delivering rapid gains in production and operational efficiency.
