Egypt mulls upgrade of fuelless units at Attaqa power plant

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, visited Attaqa Steam Power Plant in Suez to evaluate rehabilitation plans and operational improvements, according to the Egyptian Cabinet.

The focus included reactivating the plant’s fuelless fourth unit, with a capacity of 300 MW, by utilising exhaust gases from gas turbines instead of fuel, potentially saving $250 million. The minister also assessed the feasibility of reactivating the third unit to support peak demand.

Attaqa facility comprises four units, including two with a capacity of 600 MW and two with 300 MW, for a total of 900 MW.

Esmat emphasised the ministry’s strategy to optimise resources, reduce fuel consumption, and stabilise the national grid amid a 7 per cent increase in electricity demand compared to January last year.

He stressed the importance of adhering to international safety standards, improving performance, and adopting efficient operating methods. Regular inspections will ensure compliance with safety and quality benchmarks, aligning with efforts to enhance the grid’s stability and efficiency.
