Egypt plans transport university to support infrastructure mega-projects
Egypt plans to set up a dedicated transport university to train engineers and specialists for the country’s fast-growing infrastructure sector, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir said Tuesday.
El-Wazir met with Minister of Higher Education Ayman Ashour to review the executive steps for the project. The university will be jointly developed by the ministries of transport and higher education.
The anticipated university will feature three faculties — engineering, transport technology, and transport economics — offering programmes designed to produce graduates capable of designing, operating and managing major transport projects. According to a statement from the ministry of transport, the institution will support Egypt’s ambition to become a regional hub for specialised education serving African and Arab countries.
Talks also touched on cooperation with global partners including Korea National University of Transportation (KNUT) and Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU), which are expected to contribute technical expertise.
“The university will not only address the skills gap for Egypt’s mega projects, but also place Egypt on the global map as a leader in transport education,” El-Wazir said.
The two ministries agreed to hold intensive follow-up meetings to advance the work plan, with progress reports to be submitted regularly, the statement added.
