Egyptian museums to open for free on International Museum Day

Egypt’s Ministry of Culture announced on Wednesday a free entries to Egyptian museums in celebration of International Museum Day, which takes place on Thursday, May 18.

“We will celebrate this day through a comprehensive programme that includes cultural and artistic events to increase public awareness about the significant role that museums play in enhancing artistic appreciation…,” Nevine El-Kilany, the Minister of Culture, said in the statement.

Cairo hold various museums such as Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil, Mahmoud Mokhtar, Hassan Heshmat, A’fet Naji Saad Al-Khadem, and Naguib Mahfouz.

While Giza holds museums like the Mohamed Nagy, Ahmed Shawky, Taha Hussein, and Mustafa Kamel, Zakaria Al-Khonany, Ayda Abdel-Karim, and Umm Kulthum museums.

However, Alexandria is home for various museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts and Mahmoud Said Centre for Museums.

Museums like the El-Nasr Museum for Modern Art in Port Said, the El-Abnoudi Museum for the Hilalian Epic in Qena, and the Mansoura National Museum will all be open for free on Thursday as well.

This year’s theme for the International Museums Day is “Museums, Sustainability, and Wellbeing,” to show case the museums’ role in supporting sustainability and development.
