Badr Petroleum unveils ambitious drilling plan to boost production

Badr Petroleum Company unveiled on Monday an ambitious drilling plan for the next two fiscal years, aiming to further boost production from its Badr-1 field. The plan includes drilling three exploratory wells, four development wells, and re-completing 12 existing wells. The move marks a strategic shift as the field transitions from being solely a crude oil producer for 40 years to a hub for oil, natural gas, and condensates production.

The announcement was made during the general assembly meeting to review and approve the company’s investment budget for the 2025/2026 fiscal year. WEPCO, which operates the Badr-1 field, hosted the session, with Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Kareem Badawy in attendance.

Ibrahim Masoud, Chairman of WEPCO, referred to the recent successful discovery and testing of the 10-2X exploratory well, which is now producing approximately 20 million cubic feet of gas per day. Confirmed reserves from the discovery stand at 15 billion cubic feet of gas and 500,000 barrels of condensates, with an additional 60 billion cubic feet of undeveloped gas reserves and 3 million barrels of condensates identified in deeper layers, Masoud added.

Production at the Badr-1 field has reached record levels, with daily output hitting 7,700 barrels of oil equivalent—a significant increase of 160 per cent over the field’s current production targets.

Minister Badawy highlighted the importance of such discoveries and commended the government’s ongoing support for the petroleum sector. He noted that these efforts will intensify exploration and production activities, ensuring the sector’s continued contribution to Egypt’s economic development.

Badr Petroleum’s bold strategy underscores its commitment to unlocking the full potential of the Badr-1 field and advancing Egypt’s position as a regional energy leader.

In November 2014, the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) assigned WEPCO to take over the exploration and operation activities in Badr Field.
