Egypt’s Sokhna Port handles first rail-borne leather exports bound for Saudi Arabia

Egypt’s Sokhna Port received its first rail-borne export cargo shipments from Robbiki Leather City on Monday, as Cairo pushes to expand multimodal transport and strengthen its position as a regional logistics hub.

Three freight trains, each carrying 25 containers of leather products destined for Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Islamic Port, arrived at Sokhna’s Red Sea Container Terminal on behalf of French shipping group CMA CGM, the Transport Ministry said.

The cargo was transported by rail from the Robbiki industrial zone to Sokhna Port, where it will be loaded onto vessels for export.

The operation marks the first implementation of a rail-to-port logistics model linking Egypt’s industrial zones directly to maritime gateways, part of the government’s broader strategy to improve supply chain efficiency and reduce transport costs.

Egypt is developing eight integrated logistics corridors that link seaports with dry ports, border crossings, and industrial, agricultural, and mining production zones via the national railway network.

The government has increasingly prioritised expanding multimodal transport as it aims to transform Egypt into a regional hub for logistics, transit trade, and supply chain services.

The ministry said the shipments underscore Sokhna Port’s growing role as a Red Sea trade hub, supported by major infrastructure upgrades, including expanded berths, container terminals, and improved rail and road links.

Egypt has invested heavily in Sokhna and other strategic ports in recent years as part of efforts to increase cargo handling capacity, attract global shipping lines, and support export growth.
