Ex-market regulator chief Sharkawy likely to lead Egypt teleco watchdog

Egypt is likely to name former market regulator chief Ashraf El-Sharkawy as the new telecom watchdog executive director next March, senior sources from Ministry of Communications told Amwal Al Ghad Thursday.

Earlier in July 2015, Egyptian Ministry of Communications decided to appoint Mustafa Abdul Wahid as Acting Executive President of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), succeeding Hesham El Alaily, who served as NTRA official for two years.

Ashraf El-Sharkawy has more than 30 years of academic and professional experience in the field of investment, accounting and finance. He enjoys an extensive knowledge of all banking and nonbanking financial instruments and regulations, including capital markets, mortgage finance, insurance, financial leasing, securitization and factoring.

In his capacity as the chairman of the Egyptian Financial Supervisory Authority (EFSA), Deputy Chairman of EFSA and as a Senior Advisor for the chairman of the Egyptian Capital market Authority for more than six years, El-Sharkawy contributed in preparing all regulations for nonbanking financial activities.

El-Sharkawy had been a board member and financial advisor for many large industrial and investment corporations. He also served as a member in the Board of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), head of the audit committee of CBE, Member of the Monetary Policy Committee, member of the Board of trustees of the Egyptian Money Laundering Combating Unit, chairman of the board of the Egyptian Financial Services Institute, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Egyptian Institute of Directors,  and the Egyptian Corporate Social Responsibility Centre, Member of the board in the Investor Protection Fund, and board member in the real estate mortgage guarantee fund. He was the founder and the first Executive Chairman of the Egyptian Audit Oversight Board, and shared in preparing all regulations for Egypt Audit Oversight Board.
