Japan, FAO support agricultural production in Egypt with $3.8mln

Rania al-Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation has witnessed on Friday the signing of a $3.8 million grant agreement between the Japanese Embassy in Cairo and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

The grant aims to support national development efforts in the area of increasing agricultural productivity and enhancing water security.

The forthcoming programme will also strengthen climate development and action efforts by addressing the challenges facing water availability in the context of climate change, al-Mashaat said.

al-Mashat added the programme will also seeking solutions to the challenges posed by climate change, noting the importance of agriculture as a key component of Egypt’s economy and its high contribution to GDP and employment opportunities.

The cooperation between the Japanese government and FAO is consistent with the directions of the Egyptian state to achieve the integrated development of the Egyptian countryside through the presidential initiative Hayah Karima (A Decent Life).

Noteworthy, that Hani Sewilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, has attended the ceremony along with Elena Banova, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Egypt, and Oka Hiroshi, Japanese Ambassador in Cairo.
