Mubarak-Era Minster El-Feky Faces New Detention

Public Funds Prosecution ordered Sunday the detention for 15 days of Anas El-Feky, Egypt’s former information minister, pending further investigation in fresh graft accusations.

El-Feky is accused of squandering pubic funds and paving the way for former regime figures to receive LE4.5 million worth of gifts from the Egyptian Radio and Television Union.

President Hosni Mubarak, his family, ex-prime minister Ahmed Nazif were among those who are believed to have received the luxurious gifts during El-Feky’s tenure as the information minister.

Among the gifts are watches, gold pens and silk-made rugs.

Last December El-Feky was released from detention by the Cassation Court that ordered another case of corruption be retried.

In September of last year, El-Feky was given a seven-year prison sentence for squandering some LE1.8 million (roughly $230,000) from the government-run Egyptian Radio and Television Union.

El-Feky served as Mubarak’s information minister from 2004 to 12 February 2011, resigning the day after Mubarak was ousted.
