NYC skyscrapers attempt carbon capture to reduce emissions

Owners of skyscrapers in New York city are installing carbon capture network of pipes to store the building’s emissions. A new city law requires owners of buildings to drastically cut their emissions.

As an alternative to upgrading buildings, owners are opting for installing carbon capture systems. Captured carbon is stored in tanks and sold later to manufacturers who turn it into a mineral.

Buildings of NY are the highest pollutants emitting in the United States. Additionally, buildings are categorised by the city buildings department as the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions.

Some environment advocates favour a transition to renewables instead. They are also concerned about the possible hazards of storing carbon dioxide in residential areas.

It remains unclear yet whether the state of NY will consider carbon capturing of buildings an adequate carbon reduction measure.
