Russia, Egypt to join forces to produce coronavirus vaccine

Russia is looking to partner with Egypt in producing its coronavirus vaccine, branded Sputnik V, said the Russian ambassador in Cairo Georgy Borisenko on Wednesday.

The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), which is responsible for vaccine production and overseas promotion, is willing to discuss the transfer of the vaccine technology to Egypt, Borisenko added.

At least 20 countries have expressed interest in receiving the Russian vaccine, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Indonesia, Philippines, and Mexico, he added.

Russia has become the first country in the world to grant regulatory approval to a COVID-19 vaccine, out of total 165 potential vaccines being developed worldwide.

RDIF allocated an additional funding worth $45 million to the vaccine, developed by Moscow’s Gamaleya Institute in five months, Borisenko added.
