Sisi appoints Mohamed Ibrahim to head Golden Triangle Economic Zone

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Wednesday appointed Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed Ibrahim chairman of the General Authority for the Golden Triangle Economic Zone for a one-year term.

Ibrahim’s appointment took effect on 14 August, according to a statement from the authority.

Ibrahim had served as vice chairman of the Golden Triangle authority since April, helping oversee development and investment projects and strengthen engagement with local and international businesses and institutions.

The appointment comes as Egypt seeks to tap the region’s mineral resources and industrial, logistics and renewable-energy potential, while attracting domestic and foreign investment and accelerating infrastructure development.

Focus on mineral processing

The authority said its priorities include developing value chains for the region’s mineral resources rather than exporting them in raw form, establishing integrated industrial zones and attracting processing and export-oriented industries with higher added value.

It also plans to strengthen links between the zone and Red Sea ports and attract investment in energy and logistics, it said.

The Golden Triangle, spanning parts of Upper Egypt and the Red Sea region, is being positioned by the government as an investment platform due to its proximity to mineral and other natural resources, transport routes, and Red Sea ports.

The authority said the development strategy aims to support industrial localisation, increase exports, attract investment and create sustainable jobs in Upper Egypt.

Diplomatic and trade experience

Ibrahim brings more than 20 years of experience in economic diplomacy, trade, investment, and government affairs.

He began his career at Egypt’s permanent mission to the United Nations in Geneva, where he represented Egypt in World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiations, before moving to the economic and commercial office at the Egyptian Embassy in London.

He subsequently held several senior positions at Egypt’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, including director of the minister’s office.

From 2021 to 2025, he headed the Egyptian Commercial Office in Tokyo, where he worked to attract Japanese investment to strategic sectors and strengthen economic ties between Egypt and Japan.

In June 2025, he was appointed director of the technical office at Egypt’s Commercial Representation Service, overseeing files related to trade, investment and international economic relations.

Ibrahim holds a master’s degree in International Business Economics from City St George’s, University of London, an MBA from the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport, and a bachelor’s degree in International Foreign Trade from Helwan University.
