Venus Williams was eliminated at Wimbledon in the first round Monday in a 6-1, 6-3 match against Russian Elena Vesnina.
It is the first time Williams, a five-time Wimbledon and seven-time Grand Slam champion, has been eliminated in the opening round competition in 15 years.
Since being diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disorder, she has been unable to train consistently and has fallen to 58th in world rankings.
While eliminated from singles competition at Wimbledon, it is expected that she and her sister Serena Williams will compete as a doubles team, and she is also expected to compete at the London Olympics later this summer.
