Egypt’s Ahly would be difficult opponent in Bundesliga – coach Weiler

If Egypt’s Ahly played in the Bundesliga they will definitely be tough opponents, Ahly’s Swiss coach Rene Weiler told Ahram Online on Monday, praising his players’ commitment.

The 46-year-old coach, who took charge of Ahly in August 2019, has registered an outstanding performance with the Reds, leading the team in 31 games, losing in two matches, tying in four, and winning 25, achieving one of the Reds’ best runs ever and came just one game short of the best season start in 2005 of 17 consecutive wins.

During his interview with the German newspaper Kicker, Weiler was asked if the record-title holders of the African Champions League with eight titles can compete in the German Bundesliga, he replied. “We might come in eighth or 12th. But, to be honest, I don’t know. What I’m sure of is that we are hard to beat for any opponent.”

“The players are at an athletic top level, they can play football and they do it really well. In terms of their mentality, they prefer to play offensively rather than defensively, but they have made significant progress over the past few months,” he added.

As a result of the spread of the coronavirus, the Egyptian government has imposed a night-time curfew in mid-March. All clubs were closed after the suspension of football activities in the country.

Weiler stressed that he doesn’t need to keep an eye on his players’ trainings during the lockdown, saying, “the team has a very high level of self-discipline. Only in certain areas you have to interfere but with flexibility spontaneously.”

“They are all very proud, especially if they have already won a few titles and thus hold a certain position,” he added.

The Swiss has led many teams in different European countries, such as Switzerland, Belgium and Germany, so his time with the African giants Ahly is his first experience outside Europe.

“I’m very grateful and happy to have this experience. I’m enjoying experiencing a different approach in the country and with the people. And it’s fascinating to get to know a different continent, a different way of life, and football here,” said the former Anderlecht coach.

Until the suspension of sports activities, holders Ahly were strong candidates for the title this season as they currently lead the league table with 49 points from 17 matches, 16 points ahead of second-place Arab Contractors.
