Contemporary art exhibition to be presented at GEM
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is presenting its first contemporary art exhibition titled Traces of Egypt from March 19 to June 15, by German-Egyptian visual artist, Susan Hefuna.
Through the exhibition, Hefuna showcases her experience working with fabrics and collaborates with local artisans to create a series of 28 Egyptian cotton costumes, paying homage to Khayameya tradition.
The costumes are influenced by Hefuna’s drawings, and inspired by the architectural designs she is famous for, like the large wooden mashrabiya screens. The exhibition highlights Egypt’s rich heritage and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
“I seek through the use of Khayameya’s art to draw attention to the living heritage of Egypt and the importance of linking it to contemporary and modern arts,” said Hefuna.
GEM will enable its visitors to learn about Egyptian culture. GEM is set to showcase 5,000 relics from Tutankhamun’s collection, including 2,000 artifacts displayed for the first time.
The museum is ready to open, but some external preparations are being finalized before the official opening date, and is expected to attract about five million tourists.
