The Port of Rotterdam Authority started preparations for constructing a large green hydrogen plant on the Maasvlakte later this year.
Dutch Minister for Climate and Energy Rob Jetten announced the draft ministerial regulations for IJmuiden Ver Wind Farm Zone Beta.
The formal tender process for the wind farm will start in the second half of 2023. Its capacity is estimated to reach 2 GW, and it is expected to be ready around 2028.
Rotterdam is also exploring the feasibility of connecting the Maasvlakte hydrogen plants to regional heat networks. This would eventually enable using green heat to heat houses and offices.
Other several companies, including Shell and Uniper, also have plans to realise about 1.35 GW of electrolysis in Rotterdam.
Interested companies would work on realising the national aim of 4GW by 2030. Rotterdam port aims to contribute with 2 to 2.5GW of electrolysis by 2030.
