Bahrain pledges zero carbon emissions by 2060
The Kingdom of Bahrain declared on Sunday, at COP28, its dedication to a national strategy for cutting carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2035 and achieving complete carbon neutrality by 2060.
The Kingdom of Bahrain is showcasing a notable pavilion at the COP28 climate summit that exhibits Bahrain’s recent initiatives, including its National Energy Strategy, a $750 million fund launch, and the creation of the Safaa platform for voluntary carbon offsetting.
Mohammad Mezal, an Environmental Specialist at Bahrain’s Supreme Council, said that his country’s pavilion highlights the national action plan announced by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2060.
Mezal added that the strategy will be implemented through three paths: the low-carbon economy, adaptation to climate change, and creating sustainable opportunities in the new green economy.
He also stated to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that his country’s strategy was aligned with its COP26 pledge, as the Kingdom aimed to invest in the green economy and work on changing and lowering 80 percent of its carbon emissions that came from only seven places (factories) that were responsible for 80 percent of the total carbon emissions.
Mezal emphasised the importance of giving rewards to encourage energy efficiency and the use of new and green energy sources, as well as a plan to increase the number of mangrove trees by four times since 400,000 trees were planted after COP26 and the Kingdom hopes to plant 1.6 million trees by 2035.
