Swedish engineering consultancy Sweco announced plans to design one of Europe’s largest battery energy storage systems, named Green Turtle, in Belgium for GIGA Storage Belgium.
The project aims to boost the country’s energy grid by providing stored renewable energy during periods of low solar and wind production, thereby reducing reliance on gas power plants.
The Green Turtle battery park will feature a capacity of 700 megawatts and a storage capacity of 2,800 megawatt-hours, enough to supply the average annual energy needs of 385,000 households. Construction is set to begin in 2025, with completion expected by 2028.
