Starmer pledges fast-track for 150 UK infrastructure projects

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged to fast-track approval for at least 150 major infrastructure projects in a speech Thursday, as part of milestones aimed at measuring his government’s progress.

The initiatives also include increasing police numbers, reducing National Health Service (NHS) waiting lists, and building 1.5 million homes during the parliamentary term.

Starmer emphasised his administration’s commitment to “deliver real change for working people,” framing the milestones as a challenge to the civil service and a tool for voter accountability. However, the speech drew criticism for perceived ambiguity in key pledges.

Concerns arose over revised language on the clean energy transition and economic growth targets, prompting Starmer to deny accusations of weakening Labour’s election manifesto promises.

The Treasury clarified that the goal of achieving the highest sustained growth among G7 countries by the end of the parliament remains intact.

The address comes amid declining poll ratings for Labour, with Starmer facing internal challenges, including recent cabinet reshuffles and backlash against policies like tax hikes and reduced cold weather payments.

Despite these setbacks, he reaffirmed his focus on addressing the cost of living, healthcare, and education to drive economic growth.
