The 21st Africa Union (AU) summit in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, during its extraordinary summit today, marked the 50th anniversary of founding the Organization of African Unity (OAU) with the participation of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.
The African Union Summit this year is taking place alongside celebrations to mark 50 years of the continental body’s existence since its formation in 1963, as Organization of African Unity (OAU).
President Sata will be accompanied by First Lady Christine Kaseba and Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba.
Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia Susan Sikaneta said yesterday that the President was expected to jet in this morning ahead of the official opening of the summit on Monday next week.
Ms Sikaneta said President Sata would join more than 75 other African Heads of State.
Topping the agenda of the summit would be peace and security, particularly the instability in the Western Sahara Republic.
The continent’s economic performance, and science and technology advancement are among other issues to be addressed.
Mr Sata would join the meeting of the AU Committee of 10, where the leaders would look at the United Nations (UN) reforms while other meetings of the organs of the Union such as the Africa Peer Review Mechanism, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development would also be taking place.
The Heads of State would also take part in the launch of the “Proclamation” on Saturday, which sets the development agenda for Africa for the next 50 years.
Meanwhile, AU chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said Africa’s leaders should emerge from the gathering with a mission that would unite Africa and set her path to peace and prosperity.
