Egypt seeks UK expertise in key sectors

Egypt’s Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel El-Wazir, held a meeting with the UK’s Special Trade Envoy to Egypt, Yasmin Qureshi, to strengthen collaboration in industry and transport between the two nations, a statement from the Cabinet said.

El-Wazir emphasised the need to strengthen ties by increasing British investments in Egypt’s industrial sector, focusing on areas where the UK has a competitive edge such as pharmaceuticals, food, and engineering.

He also reviewed British companies’ involvement in transport projects in Egypt, highlighting the significance of the Monorail project as a major modern and environmentally friendly transportation initiative. El-Wazir also stressed the importance of the British side’s support for the Ministry of Transport in terms of Monorail maintenance, spare parts supply, and addressing any potential challenges that may arise during the project.

The meeting also addressed projects led by several British companies operating in the Egyptian market, some of which are seeking to expand their factories or launch new ventures, the statement added. These include Blue Sky, a company specialising in processed fruits for export to the UK and Europe, and Polar Hydro, which is looking to establish a plant for waste recycling and energy production. El-Wazir assured British companies of prompt approval for expansion and full support from the Ministry of Industry, with follow-up teams monitoring progress for timely implementation.

Furthermore, he explained that Egypt is keen on establishing high-capacity seawater desalination and wastewater treatment plants, as well as manufacturing the necessary equipment for these facilities.

He also highlighted Egypt’s focus on wind energy, solar energy, and green hydrogen projects to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, leveraging the extensive expertise of British companies in these fields.

However, Qureshi reaffirmed her country’s commitment to enhancing and increasing British investments in Egypt in the coming period and strengthening trade relations between the two nations, the statement clarified.

She thanked the Minister El Wazir for the support rendered to British companies in Egypt and praised the Ministry of Industry for its efficient processing procedures, which benefit companies investing in Egypt.
