Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar held a meeting on Tuesday with Assistant Minister for Hospital Affairs Ahmed Saafan to discuss a series of initiatives under the national strategy that aim at enhancing healthcare quality and achieving universal health coverage, as per a Cabinet statement.
Abdel Ghaffar reviewed a nationwide plan to improve dialysis services. He was briefed on the latest developments in the Nephro Egypt platform and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) project. The meeting also tackled efforts to digitise several public hospitals.
The minister examined performance indicators for the ICU project, which has so far served 5,111 patients with a total of 42,000 treatment nights. A proposal to amend dialysis regulations was also discussed, aiming at improving patient access within the upgraded system.
Talks included a project to localise the production of dialysis filters in partnership with domestic firms. Abdel Ghaffar stressed the need to make concrete progress in this vital area, citing its direct impact on Egypt’s health security.
Saafan proposed forming a committee of ministry and affiliated authority leaders to identify and better utilise underused assets and resources, highlighting key opportunities including reopening closed hospitals, completing stalled health projects, upgrading low-traffic facilities, and improving services in radiology, laboratories, ambulance operations, infant formula distribution, health initiatives, and dialysis.
The first phase of the development plan will be launched in five governorates—Qena, Ismailia, Fayoum, Gharbia, and Luxor—before being rolled out nationally based on performance assessments.
