Egypt, Sweden discuss energy cooperation, grid link to Europe

Egypt and Sweden held talks on Tuesday to boost cooperation on renewable energy, green hydrogen, and power grid interconnection with Europe, amid growing interest in clean energy investment and export.

The meeting, led by Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat and Sweden’s Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Johan Forssell, brought together senior ministry officials and representatives from joint Egyptian-Swedish energy firms.

Talks focused on scaling up Egypt’s clean energy capacity and integrating renewables into the national grid through energy storage and advanced technologies. Minister Esmat said Egypt remains committed to diversifying its energy mix and encouraging private-sector investment in green power.

The ministers reviewed ongoing renewable projects, a planned 1,000-megawatt battery storage facility, and Swedish-funded technical studies for long-term capacity planning.

Progress on Egypt–Europe interconnection projects was also discussed, as Egypt aims to become a regional energy hub by exporting surplus solar and wind energy to European markets.

Minister Esmat underlined that cross-border interconnection is central to Egypt’s national energy strategy and economic positioning.

Forssell praised Egypt’s clean energy progress and reaffirmed Sweden’s interest in strengthening cooperation in sustainable and innovative energy solutions.
