Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat on Tuesday met with senior officials from Électricité de France (EDF) Group, France’s state-owned power utility, to discuss expanding cooperation in renewable energy and energy storage.
The discussions addressed Egypt’s national energy strategy, with emphasis on the potential of pumped-storage hydroelectric stations to stabilise the grid, maximise wind and solar output, and reduce reliance on traditional fuels.
Esmat highlighted the government’s commitment to smart grid transformation and ongoing infrastructure upgrades to accommodate new clean energy capacity.
Esmat praised EDF’s longstanding collaboration with Egypt’s electricity ministry, including generation projects and prospective electricity interconnection with Europe.
He also stressed the country’s direction towards securing sustainable, low-cost, and clean energy sources through public-private partnerships, aligned with its goals to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
