Egypt, Qatar launch joint airspace initiative

Egypt and Qatar have launched a joint technical cooperation project aimed at shortening flight routs within Egyptian airspace, a move that will enhance operational efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and lower carbon emissions, the Cabinet has said.

The newly launched initiative aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) environmental requirements and the shared sustainable development goals of both countries.

Discussions also covered a Qatari proposal to strengthen cooperation in technical and regulatory fields, alongside Egypt’s efforts to modernise airspace management and upgrade air navigation infrastructure.

Sameh El-Hefny, Egypt’s Minister of Civil Aviation, praised the strong bilateral ties and joint efforts in civil aviation, describing them as a model for regional integration built on mutual respect and shared vision.

He stated that the cooperation stems from a bilateral air transport agreement, reinforced by multiple memoranda of understanding to boost passenger and cargo flights and facilitate access to Egyptian airports in line with growing air traffic.

Sameh added that the initiative represents a strategic step in strengthening Egypt’s airspace infrastructure and supports its goal to become a regional aviation hub, while advancing national environmental sustainability efforts in the sector.

He expressed Egypt’s aspiration to expand cooperation with Qatar in air safety, technical training, and knowledge exchange, contributing to sustainable aviation growth and more efficient operations in both countries.

Qatari Ambassador lauded Egypt’s ongoing infrastructure development, its strategic regional role, and the initiative’s potential to boost air, trade, and tourism links, according to the Cabinet’s announcement.
