Egypt allocates nearly EGP 3 million in support for informal workers

Egypt’s Labour Ministry approved 2.990 million Egyptian pounds on Sunday to provide social, health, and accident support for 408 informal workers across 25 governorates.

The funds, drawn from the Central Account for the Protection and Welfare of Informal Workers, include 890,000 pounds for social and health grants covering marriage, birth, and family bereavement allowances, as well as support for major and minor surgeries, benefiting 261 workers. Another 16,834 pounds were allocated for direct health care costs, including medical examinations, lab tests, imaging, and medication, assisting 128 workers.

The ministry also approved 2 million pounds in accident compensation, providing 200,000 pounds to the families of nine workers who died and 20,000 pounds to 10 injured workers. The payments support victims of incidents such as a truck collision on the Giza desert road, a suffocation accident in a Sharqia sewage pit, and the drowning of an agricultural worker in Ismailia while rescuing children from a canal.

Labour Minister Mohamed Gobran said the support reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to expand social protection, ensure a decent standard of living, and provide targeted assistance to vulnerable groups, in line with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives.
